Future road sign

Art, Design, and Digital Culture, University of Pennsylvania
Supervised by Keith Fledderman, Professor

The prompt for this project was to create a sign for a future cause or problem using Illustrator and only two colors (and white if needed).

After the initial brainstorm, which included ideas such as avocado extinction, human-animal translators, hovering umbrellas, and downloadable food, I decided to pursue the future problem requiring a road sign that warns you when there's another dimension up ahead. Upon settling on this idea, it was clear that I would utilise yellow, black, and white colors, which is traditional of signs indicating caution and effective in drawing people's attention. To build on this visibility, I decided to go for bold, iconic graphics.

The first iteration developed from the idea of symbolising the x-, y-, and z-axes. However, the design was not distinctive enough and could be easily interpreted as a road sign signifying an upcoming intersection with a left turn, a straight road, and a diagonal road. With the second iteration, I tried another way of signifying that z-axis.

With the third iteration, I refocused on the dimensional aspect of the road sign, represented by a cube-like symbol, and the final design furthered this direction.
